About Mr Owen Mattern

Mr Owen Mattern | Shoulder and Elbow Orthopaedic Surgeon

Owen graduated from medicine at Newcastle University in 2004 and moved to Melbourne in 2006. He completed the Victorian Orthopaedic training in 2016, being accepted as a Fellow into the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association. After working as a Visiting Orthopaedic Surgeon at Box Hill and Sandringham Hospitals he completed further specialist training in 2017 and 2018.

Owen completed clinical fellowships with world experts at the Sydney Shoulder Research Institute, under the guidance of Mr Ben Cass, Mr Allan Young and Mr Jeff Hughes, and the Upper Limb Unit at the Centre for Excellence for Orthopaedic Surgery at Wrightington Hospital in the United Kingdom, working with Mr Mike Walton, Prof Len Funk, Prof Adam Watts and Mr Steve Bale. These fellowships gave Owen experience in the management of complex upper limb conditions.

Having returned to Melbourne, Owen currently operates publicly at Sandringham District Hospital and Frankston Hospital. He currently consults and operates out of Linacre Private Hospital, Holmesglen Private Hospital, Langwarrin Orthopaedics and Cabrini Malvern Private Hospital

Owen has a keen interest in conditions affecting the shoulder and elbow as well general orthopaedic trauma, and specialises in arthroscopy, joint replacement surgery and traumatic conditions affecting these joints.
